Catch up with the Student Goverment Association this semester

The Student Government Association (SGA) at High Point University has a variety of events students can look forward to in the Spring 2019 semester. A key objective for the SGA is to focus on building a relationship with the administration and the student body.

Since the beginning of the Spring 2019 semester, the President of SGA Lyndsey Clos, worked with the University to get rid of plastic in campus dining halls. In lieu of the usual plastic to-go boxes, an environmentally-friendly box took place. Getting rid of plastic straws have also been a part of her going-green initiative.

“I love being able to represent the entire student body,” said Clos, along with tackling environmental concerns on HPU’s campus. She additionally admires being able to voice the opinions of students on a variety of concerns.

President Clos works day-to-day with the 13 executive council members on a number of issue areas, as well as meeting with the Student Government Association Advisor Summer Chandler for the daily agenda. President Clos hopes to continue working attentively on building a relationship with the administration and the student body.

Fostering these relationships between the student body and the University, allows students to be kept up-to-date with the most recent information pertaining to HPU as well as allowing students to be a part of the decision-making process on a variety of issues. Events later this Spring 2019 semester are targeted for establishing an effective relationship with the administration and student body.

On Feb. 21, students have the opportunity to attend a security panel pertaining to HPU’s current security system on campus. All students are welcomed to attend this panel discussion and are encouraged to offer new ideas on how to improve HPU’s current system. Those in attendance will additionally include the SGA executive council, student officers and the University’s security officers. The event will take place in the Earl N. Phillips School of Business in room 120.

This past week, Monday, Jan. 28 through Friday, Feb. 1, the SGA has been working with the Multicultural Affairs organization for “HPUnity Week.” The week has been celebrated with a number of activities celebrating different ethnic cultures and backgrounds.

Thursday, Jan. 31, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., HPU Multicultural Affairs and the SGA are working in conjunction in an event titled, “(Un)Common Grounds: A Campus Conversation.” The event highlights the importance of “why human stories matter.” Those who are interested in attending will be meeting in the Earl N. Phillips School of Business in room 120. A variety of organizations at HPU have been working together with HPU Multicultural Affairs during this week of events.

The SGA is currently planning a social event that would involve all student organizations on campus this Spring semester. The President of the SGA Lyndsey Clos hopes to organize a competition, in which members of organizations compete to raise money for a charity of the winner’s choice. Further dates and details are to be announced at a later date.

Students at HPU have the opportunity to take part in the SGA election process. Rising-sophomores, rising-juniors and rising-seniors will be able to run for a position on the executive council, or for a class president or officer position.

The election process does not begin until this April however, students are encouraged to attend meetings prior to running for a position.
