Men’s and women’s track and field teams take bronze

High Point University men’s and women’s track and field teams both finished third overall in the team standings on Feb. 26 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The men finished with 92.5 points to place third, behind Liberty (205) and Campbell (170). The women’s team finished in third place with 97.5 points, behind Liberty (207) and Campbell (174).

Freshman Kanajzae Brown broke the school record and won gold in the 60 meter event in a time of 7.60. She defeated Campbell’s Deonica Reid, by 0.001 to become HPU’s first Big South Champion in the event.

Freshman Pablo Romero Gonzalez won the heptathlon title with a personal record score of 4,965 points, the second-best score in HPU history. Gonzalez became HPU’s second heptathlon champion, joining Tristan Faure in 2015. Senior Pat Irwin scored 4,310 points for fifth and senior Drew Francoeur placed seventh with 3,583 points.

Gonzalez also finished seventh in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.60. Irwin finished in a tie for seventh in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.89 (6-2.5).

In the 800 meters, sophomore Keaton Case had a strong final 200 meter event to place second with a personal record (PR) time of 2:12:88. Senior Cozette Collin placed fifth with a time of 2:16:89.

Junior James House earned all-conference honors in the 60 meter event, placing second in 6.95, while sophomore Sean Branda was seventh in the event with a time of 7.12. House also finished fifth in the 200 meter event with a time of 22.74.

At the end of the tournament, Todaro and Jamie Schnuck were named to the Big South All-Academic Team.

HPU hosted the Bill Webb Combined Events on March 16 and 17 and the Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off on March 17 and 18 at Vert Stadium.
