‘The Disaster Artist’ proves to be a masterpiece in the world of film

By Jack Murphy: Staff Writer

Directed by James Franco, “ e Disaster Artist” is the 2017 adaptation of the novel by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell about the making of the lm, “ e Room.” e lm stars James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcher- son,Ari Graynor,Zoey Deutch and Allison Brie.“ e Disaster Artist”follows the friendship duo of Tommy Wiseau ( James Franco) and Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) as they try to make their own movie in Hollywood film industry.

The rest of the lm follows the making of “ e Room” and how Greg and Tommy had no idea what they were doing. I’m a mas- sive fan of “The Room” because I love everything about Tommy Wiseau and the mystery that is his character, both in the lm and in real life, which also makes it a really fun movie to watch with friends. “ The Disaster Artist” was made for me, and it did not disappoint.

By far the best part of this movie is James Franco as Tommy Wiseau. If someone had to describe Tommy Wiseau to someone who had never heard of him, the description would be of an incredibly pale white guy with long black hair that is in his 40’s, who says he’s in his 20’s, speaks in a European accent, and has a fashion style similar to Rus- sell Westbrook. He’s a very hard person for the average person to latch onto and relate to. However, Franco gives his best performance of Wiseau’s career and makes the audience really care for him throughout the lm, and he nails the accent perfectly. Wiseau really does embody the story of following your dreams and making them happen, even if it is done in the most unlikely of ways.

The rest of the cast does a great job covering the craziness that was the making of “ The Room,” as Tommy Wiseau had absolutely no idea what he was doing while making this movie. We see him lming with two cameras both on lm and in HD, not providing the cast water on set at times, and filming in a studio without air conditioning. Seth Rogen is brilliant as Sandy Schklair, the producer and uncredited director of “The Room.” Dave Franco does a great job as Greg Sestero, seeing things through the audience’s eyes and being that character that the audience can relate to. It was really nice seeing all the celebrity cameos for once, because they all showed the love for “The Room.” I just love seeing how far this little movie with a small following grew into something as huge as this.

Above all else, the thing that makes “ The Disaster Artist” so charming is that Franco takes this larger than life character and brings him down to earth. Being able to care for and relate to Franco as Wiseau, while also being able to laugh at him and his ridiculousness, makes the experience so great. At the heart of “The Disaster Artist” is an unconventional success story, that is as unbelievable as they come.

The question a lot of people have wondered is whether or not you should have seen “ The Room” before you see “ The Disaster Artist.” You don’t have to have seen “ The Room,” but I would recommend watching it with a group of friends one night and then going to see “ The Disaster Artist,” as it will make the experience that much better. Overall, “ The Disaster Artist” was my favorite movie of 2017, and I would recommend it to anyone.
