‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ is a spectacular super-hero game and exclusive

By Jack Murphy// Staff Writer

From Insomniac Games, “Marvels Spider-Man” for PS4 is the new PS4 exclusive that allows players to swing from building to building as everyone’s favorite web-slinger. As Spiderman, players have to team up against the sinister six and save New York as only Spiderman could. This game was highly anticipated by many gamers and is part of the reason PS4 sales have skyrocketed. Gamers looked forward to this game for a couple of reasons. One, it looked incredible from the trailers released and two,  for fans of the Batman Arkham games, there had not been any good superhero games since “Batman: Arkham Knight” which came out in 2015. Thankfully, this game makes many improvements on the Arkham games and could be considered the best superhero game since “Batman: Arkham City.”

“Marvel’s Spiderman” is a beautiful game to look at, easily being one of the prettiest games ever released on the PS4. The gameplay mechanics are incredibly fluid and easy to learn, improving on the mechanics first implemented in the Batman Arkham games. The game plays a lot like the Arkham games as well by incorporating three layers of gameplay, being open combat, stealth and free roam. The combat is incredibly fluid and simple, but there are many options of attack to beat up the thugs of New York City. The stealth is easy to learn but gets stale after a while. There are fewer combination options and a couple of moves that work so efficiently, there was no reason to stop doing the same things. Finally, there’s the free roam gameplay, which could be the most praiseworthy part of the entire game.

The best part about Spiderman as a superhero is his swinging from building to building throughout the streets of New York. It wasn’t much fun swinging from signs in Time Square then to go to the Empire State Building to climb to the top. “Spiderman” gives players the freedom to explore New York City, which is fantastic. To go from different parts of the city hearing Spiderman tell jokes and fight crime would transport any player back to their childhood.

It does feel very much like a comic book; the story works very well in the world that Insomniac has created. The story of “Spiderman” could be too straightforward which could be the only other criticism with the game. However, the story could have been more appreciated if it weren’t as easy to tell what was going to happen next, or if it wasn’t as repetitive. It was very predictable.

For comic fans and even people who don’t know much about “Spiderman,”  it is an incredible game if you own a PS4 and many would recommend.
